01 — Overview
What you're actually paying for
A mobile mechanic's price has two parts: the parts and the labor. The parts cost what they cost; a mobile mechanic buys from the same suppliers a shop does, often the same NAPA, AutoZone or O'Reilly counter. The labor is quoted for the job, based on how long that repair takes on your vehicle. That's it. There's no line for the building, the lifts, the service writer or the lobby coffee.
What you're not paying for matters just as much. No tow to get the car to a shop. No diagnostic fee that vanishes if you decline the repair. No shuttle, no rental, no afternoon off work. When people compare mobile mechanic cost to a shop estimate, they usually forget to add those to the shop side.
Every mobile mechanic on Mobile Auto Repair quotes before the visit, and the number you approve is the number you pay. This page explains how that quote is built and what changes it.
02 — Price drivers
What makes a mobile mechanic quote go up or down
The same repair can cost different amounts on different cars, and that's about the car, not the mechanic:
- The part: an alternator for a common sedan is a fraction of one for a European SUV. Parts are the biggest variable
- Access: a starter hanging off the bellhousing is an hour; one under the intake manifold is three
- Vehicle type: trucks, vans and diesels often have larger, pricier components and longer labor times
- Scope: pads alone versus pads and rotors, one bearing versus two, a belt versus a belt and tensioner
- Diagnosis: a known job is quoted straight; an unknown symptom gets a diagnostic charge first, then a repair quote
- Timing: a late-night call in cities with after-hours service may carry a modest premium, always quoted up front
03 — Shop vs. mobile
Why mobile mechanic cost often beats the shop
A shop's hourly rate funds a building, equipment, insurance on a commercial property, a front desk and a parts markup that covers the parts department's overhead. A mobile mechanic funds a van and a toolbox. For the repairs both can do, the mobile labor charge is usually the same or lower for the same hours of work.
Then add the things a shop visit costs that never show up on its invoice: the tow if the car can't move, the ride to and from, the hours waiting. For a full side-by-side comparison, see that page. The short version: for everyday repairs, mobile usually wins on the total number, and always wins on the time.
04 — Quotes
How to get an accurate mobile mechanic quote
Give the mechanic your vehicle's year, make, model and engine, the symptom or the job you want done, and where the car is parked. For a known job, like brake pads or a battery, that's enough for a firm quote. For a symptom, like a noise or a warning light, you'll get a diagnostic charge quoted first and a repair quote once the cause is confirmed.
Ask what the quote includes. A good one covers parts, labor, fluids and disposal, and states whether a diagnostic charge is applied toward the repair. If anything changes once the work starts, the mechanic checks with you before changing it. That's the standard across all 250 of our cities, and it's why there are no surprise invoices.

The honest answer on price
We don't publish a price list because the same job varies by vehicle, and a number that's right for a Civic is wrong for a Range Rover. What we do promise: the quote comes before the work, it's for the whole job, and it doesn't change without your approval. Reach out through your city page with your vehicle details and you'll have a real number in minutes.
If you're comparing to a shop, compare the whole cost: their estimate plus the tow, the ride and your time. That's the number that mobile mechanic cost should be measured against.

Mobile mechanic cost FAQ
Straight answers about mobile mechanic cost: what it covers, what it costs and how fast a mobile mechanic can get to you.
Q.01How much does a mobile mechanic charge per hour?
Most quote by the job rather than the hour, so you know the total before work starts. Where an hourly rate is used, it's typically at or below a shop's rate because there's no building to fund. Reach out to your city's mechanic for a quote on your specific repair.
Q.02Is there a call-out or travel fee?
Usually it's built into the labor quote. Some mechanics state a travel component for calls well outside their normal area. Either way it's part of the upfront number, never added afterward.
Q.03Do I pay for a diagnosis if I don't do the repair?
The diagnostic charge covers the mechanic's time and testing, so yes, that's owed. Many mechanics apply it toward the repair if you proceed. You walk away with a confirmed diagnosis either way, which has real value at any shop.
Q.04Are mobile mechanic parts more expensive?
No. Mobile mechanics buy from the same suppliers shops do, and most pass parts through at or near cost without a parts-department markup.
