Route briefing How a mobile mechanic reaches you in Aurora
  1. Aurora sits on both banks of the Fox River and spills across Kane, DuPage, Will and Kendall counties. I-88, the Reagan Tollway, cuts across the north side of the city with interchanges at Orchard Road, IL 31, Farnsworth Avenue and IL 59, connecting Aurora with Naperville, the DuPage office corridor and Chicago. IL 31 and IL 25 follow the river north and south, US 30 crosses the south side between Sugar Grove and Plainfield, and IL 56 runs east as Butterfield Road toward Warrenville.

  2. The city has two very different halves. The older core around downtown and the West Side has a traditional street grid, river bridges and plenty of narrow lots. The Far East Side, out along IL 59 and Eola Road, is newer suburban development with wide roads, big retail centers and subdivisions. IL 59 is the busiest shopping corridor and backs up constantly, and stop-and-go there and on Farnsworth Avenue is hard on brakes and transmissions. Tollway breakdowns are the most stressful, since the shoulders are busy and help can take time to arrive.

  3. Metra's BNSF line runs from the Aurora Transportation Center downtown through the Route 59 station and on to Chicago, so plenty of people commute by train and leave a car parked all day. Pace buses fill in local routes, and the riverfront has trails on both banks. For most households, though, a working car is a necessity, and a repair that comes to the driveway saves a long day.

Around Aurora, where the car sits

8 areas · pinned
  1. Downtown Aurora

The historic center on Stolp Island and both riverbanks, with the theater district, city offices and the Waubonsee Community College downtown campus. Public parking decks and street spots work for most repairs; share the level and nearest cross street.

  2. West Side

Older neighborhoods west of the river with Victorian and early twentieth-century homes, alleys and detached garages near Aurora University. Alleys and garage pads make on-site work easy, though some driveways are narrow.

  3. Near East Side

Established neighborhoods east of the river toward Phillips Park and its zoo, with modest homes, mature trees and street parking. Cars that sit outside through winter here often need batteries and brake hardware.

  4. Far East Side

Newer subdivisions, townhomes and apartment complexes out along IL 59 and Eola Road, mostly in DuPage and Will counties. Wide driveways and HOA streets make brake and battery jobs straightforward.

  5. Fox Valley and the IL 59 corridor

The busy retail and medical district around the big shopping centers and hospital campuses on the east side. Workday repairs in store and office lots are routine, and a mechanic can meet you during a shift.

  6. Route 59 Metra station area

One of the busiest commuter stations in the region, with huge parking lots on the Aurora and Naperville line. Cars that won't start after a cold day of sitting are a common reason to meet a mechanic here.

  7. Boulder Hill and the Montgomery edge

Unincorporated neighborhoods south of the city near Montgomery along IL 31 and IL 25. Mostly single-family homes with driveways and carports, a short drive from downtown Aurora.

  8. North end and the IMSA area

The neighborhoods around the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy and the I-88 interchanges on the north side. Easy tollway access and residential driveways make quick on-site visits simple.

07 — Local conditions

What Fox Valley weather does to a car

Field report · 3 findings
  1. 01 Finding 1 of 3

Northern Illinois winters are long, and the Fox Valley sees plenty of snow, ice and stretches below zero.

Cold weather finishes off weak batteries and exposes tired starters and alternators, and frozen mornings bring a wave of no-starts on driveways and in Metra lots. Salt and brine on I-88, IL 59 and the city streets coat brake lines, fuel lines and exhaust systems, and years of that exposure leave older vehicles with seized calipers and rusted-through components.

  2. 02 Finding 2 of 3

The river shapes the city's roads.

Low-lying streets near the Fox River and its creeks can flood during heavy spring rain, and driving through standing water can damage wheel bearings, electrical connectors and engines. Freeze-thaw cycles split pavement on the older grid streets and the heavily traveled east-side arterials, so potholes are a constant spring hazard. Bent rims, damaged tires and worn tie rods and ball joints are the predictable result.

  3. 03 Finding 3 of 3

Summers are hot and humid, and the retail traffic on IL 59 in July heats brakes, transmissions and cooling systems on every car stuck at a light.

Air conditioning works overtime, which exposes weak compressors and slow refrigerant leaks. Strong thunderstorms bring hail and fallen limbs in the older tree-lined neighborhoods. Around Aurora, the two checkups that pay off most are tires and suspension after the thaw and a battery test before the first hard freeze.

“My car broke down on the side of the road, and within minutes of calling, their mobile mechanic arrived. In no time, my car was up and running again.”

08 — Questions

Aurora FAQ

Q.01Do you serve Naperville, Oswego and Montgomery?

Yes. Aurora mobile mechanics typically cover the Fox Valley, including Naperville, Oswego, Montgomery, Batavia and North Aurora.

Q.02Do mobile mechanics work in Illinois winters?

Yes. A garage or carport helps, but most repairs can be done outdoors.

Q.03My car won't start in the cold. Can you fix it on-site?

Yes. Cold no-starts are usually a battery, starter or charging problem, all repaired on-site.

Q.04Can a mechanic come to the Route 59 Metra lot or the Aurora Transportation Center?

Usually, yes. Cars left in commuter lots all day, especially in winter, often won't start on the way home. Share the lot, row and nearest landmark, plus your vehicle details. The mechanic will test the battery and charging system, replace the battery if needed and check the starter. Evening appointments are often possible so the car is ready when your train gets in.

Q.05Can my air conditioning be fixed in my driveway?

Most common A/C problems can be diagnosed and repaired on-site, including recharging the system and replacing a failed compressor clutch, a bad relay or a leaking hose or fitting. The mechanic will check pressures and look for leaks first, then quote the repair. Aurora summers are humid enough that a weak system becomes miserable fast, so it's worth having it looked at early in the season.

Q.06I hit a pothole on IL 59. What should I have checked?

Start with the tire and wheel, since sidewall bulges and bent rims are the most common damage. After that, have the alignment, tie rods, ball joints and struts inspected, especially if the steering wheel is off-center or the car pulls to one side. A mobile mechanic can inspect all of it in your driveway and replace damaged suspension parts on-site in many cases.
