Route briefing How a mobile mechanic reaches you in Billings
  1. Billings sits in the Yellowstone River valley below the sandstone cliffs of the Rimrocks, and its highways follow the river. I-90 runs along the south side of the city, heading west toward Laurel, Bozeman and Butte and east toward Hardin and Sheridan. I-94 begins just east of town and heads northeast toward Miles City and the Dakotas. US 87 runs north through the Billings Heights along Main Street toward Roundup, and US 212 heads southwest from Laurel toward Red Lodge and the Beartooth Highway. MT 3 climbs the Rims past the airport and continues northwest across the plains.

  2. The valley floor is laid out on a grid, with the West End stretching toward Shiloh Road and the Heights spread out on the far side of the Rims. Getting between the two means Main Street, Airport Road or Zimmerman Trail, which climbs the cliffs on a steep, winding grade. Those routes and the I-90 interchanges at 27th Street and King Avenue are where most breakdowns happen.

  3. Billings Logan International Airport sits on top of the Rimrocks overlooking the city, and its lots are a common place for a car that won't start after a winter trip. MET Transit buses run along the main corridors, but most people drive everywhere, often over long distances.

  4. Billings is the trade and medical center for a huge stretch of Montana and northern Wyoming, so people drive in from ranches and small towns far away. A breakdown far from home is common here, and fixing it on the spot saves a very long tow.

Around Billings, where the car sits

8 areas · pinned
  1. Downtown Billings

Office buildings, parking garages and the historic district along Montana Avenue and the rail line. Ramps are the warmest place downtown to work on a car in January.

  2. The medical corridor

The two large hospital campuses north of downtown, with staff garages and patient lots. Out-of-town patients and staff alike get batteries and starters handled here.

  3. The West End

Newer subdivisions and shopping along King Avenue, Grand Avenue and Shiloh Road, with wide streets and attached garages suited to bigger jobs. New streets keep appearing out past Shiloh, so a precise address helps.

  4. The Billings Heights

The large residential area northeast of the Rims along Main Street, with subdivisions, driveways and garages. Wind and drifting snow hit harder up here than in the valley, and Main Street traffic peaks at rush hour, so midday visits are quickest.

  5. The South Side

Older neighborhoods south of the rail yards near South Park and the refineries, with modest homes and driveways. Work trucks and family cars share the streets, and trains can block the crossings for a few minutes, which sometimes delays arrival.

  6. Central Billings and the colleges

Established neighborhoods around Montana State University Billings and Rocky Mountain College, with older homes and student housing. Campus lots require the school's permit.

  7. Lockwood

The community east of the city along I-90 and I-94, with larger lots, shop buildings and industrial yards. Pickups and service rigs are a big share of the work.

  8. The Rims and the airport road

Homes along the top of the Rimrocks with big views and steady wind. The approach roads ice up fast, so allow a little extra time in winter.

07 — Local conditions

What eastern Montana does to a car

Field report · 4 findings
  1. 01 Finding 1 of 4

Billings weather is a study in extremes.

Arctic air can hold temperatures far below zero for days, and then a chinook can sweep down from the mountains and melt the snow in hours. Those swings are hard on batteries, belts and hoses, and a battery that survived a deep freeze may fail the following week. Diesel trucks, common on ranches and job sites, need winterized fuel and working glow plugs to start in the worst cold.

  2. 02 Finding 2 of 4

Wind is constant on the Rims and the open plains, drifting snow across roads and packing it into grilles, wheel wells and engine bays.

In summer, hailstorms can roll through quickly and damage glass and body panels. Gravel ranch roads and highway construction chip windshields and paint, rattle suspension parts and fill air filters with dust. Long highway trips across the state rack up wear on tires, brakes and cooling systems fast.

  3. 03 Finding 3 of 4

Freeze-thaw cycles open potholes on King Avenue, Main Street and the neighborhood streets, and the steep grades on Zimmerman Trail and Airport Road work brakes hard, especially on icy days.

A battery and block heater check in fall, winterized fuel for diesels, a spring suspension inspection and a filter change after dusty summers fit the way Billings drives.

  4. 04 Finding 4 of 4

Pickups, SUVs and all-wheel-drive vehicles fill Billings driveways, and many of them tow trailers, campers or livestock.

Towing loads up transmissions, brakes, wheel bearings and cooling systems, and long hauls across the state in summer heat push them harder still. Trucks that tow regularly benefit from more frequent fluid changes, a close look at the brakes and a trailer wiring check before the season starts.

08 — Questions

Billings FAQ

Q.01Do you come out to ranches and job sites?

Yes. On-site repair at ranches, shops and job sites around Billings is common. Share the location and the problem.

Q.02Do you serve Laurel and Lockwood?

Most Billings mobile mechanics cover Yellowstone County, including Laurel, Lockwood, Shepherd and Huntley. Confirm your address when you reach out.

Q.03Can you install a block heater?

Yes. Block heater installation and repair is a common on-site job in Montana. Share your vehicle details to confirm parts.

Q.04Can a mechanic meet me at Billings Logan airport on the Rims?

Yes. A car that won't start after a trip in the cold is one of the most common requests up on the Rims, and the airport lots have room to work. Give the lot and row when you reach out. The mechanic will test the battery and charging system, replace the battery if needed and make sure the car starts reliably before you leave.

Q.05My diesel pickup won't start below zero. What's usually wrong?

Gelled fuel, failed glow plugs or weak batteries, and sometimes all three. A diesel needs strong batteries and working glow plugs to start in deep cold, and fuel that isn't winterized can gel in the lines and filter. The mechanic can test the batteries and glow plugs, check the fuel filter and get the truck running in your driveway.

Q.06I'm in Billings for medical care, far from home, and my car died. Can you help?

Yes. Many people drive in from ranches and small towns across Montana and Wyoming for appointments, and a breakdown in a hospital lot is a common request. Tell the mechanic which lot and space the car is in. The problem gets diagnosed and repaired on the spot, so you can head home without arranging a long tow.
