Route briefing How a mobile mechanic reaches you in Concord
  1. Concord sits on the Merrimack River in the middle of New Hampshire, and three interstates meet at its edges. I-93 runs north-south along the east side of the river, heading north toward the Lakes Region and the White Mountains and south toward Manchester. I-89 begins just south of the city in Bow and heads northwest toward Lebanon and Vermont. I-393 runs east from I-93 toward Pembroke and Chichester, continuing as US 4 and US 202 toward the Seacoast. US 3 follows Main Street and North State Street through the city, and NH 106 heads northeast toward Loudon and Laconia.

  2. Concord is small, and traffic is moderate most of the day. The busiest spots are the I-93 and I-393 interchange, Loudon Road on the Heights, where the main shopping centers sit, and Main Street at lunch. Breakdowns pile up on I-93 and I-89 in winter, when snow squalls drop visibility and slick the long hills. Many state workers drive in from the surrounding towns, often on rural roads.

  3. Concord Municipal Airport on the east side serves small aircraft, and most travelers fly from Manchester-Boston Regional to the south. Local buses run a few routes, but nearly everyone drives. People from the surrounding towns come into Concord daily for work, shopping and medical care.

  4. The motor speedway in nearby Loudon draws huge crowds on race weekends, and NH 106 and the I-393 corridor fill with traffic from Friday through Sunday.

Around Concord, where the car sits

8 areas · pinned
  1. Downtown and the State House

Main Street, the gold-domed State House, the Legislative Office Building and the state agencies around them, with garages and surface lots. Repairs in agency lots happen regularly once the agency signs off.

  2. The Heights

The neighborhoods and shopping centers along Loudon Road east of the river, with ranch homes, apartments and big parking lots. Weekend shopping traffic on Loudon Road is heavy.

  3. The South End

Established residential streets south of downtown toward Bow, with older homes and driveways. Routine battery and brake work makes up most visits, and many homes have a detached garage out back.

  4. Penacook

The village at the north end of the city along the Contoocook River, with older mill-era homes and narrow streets. Note any tight spots or shared driveways; the river can run high in spring.

  5. East Concord

The quiet neighborhoods east of the river near the airport, with larger lots and rural roads. Plenty of room to work, and deer and wild turkeys often cross the back roads.

  6. The West End

Older neighborhoods west of downtown with tree-lined streets, Victorian homes and detached garages. A garage makes longer jobs comfortable in any season.

  7. NHTI and Concord Hospital

The community college campus and the regional hospital on the city's west and north sides, with student lots and staff parking where daytime repairs fit easily. Student cars sit through breaks too.

  8. The North End

Residential streets north of downtown near the river, with older homes and established neighborhoods. Steep side streets get icy in winter.

07 — Local conditions

What central New Hampshire does to a car

Field report · 5 findings
  1. 01 Finding 1 of 5

Concord's winters are colder and snowier than the southern part of the state.

Arctic air can drive temperatures well below zero, and nor'easters and clipper systems bring repeated rounds of snow and ice. Batteries, starters and block heaters get tested on the coldest mornings, and cars parked outside in state lots all day often struggle to start at quitting time. Short trips across town never let a tired battery fully recharge.

  2. 02 Finding 2 of 5

Salt and brine on I-93, I-89 and the city streets eat at brake lines, fuel lines and exhaust parts, and the rural roads around the city get a mix of salt and sand that packs into brake hardware. Seized calipers, frozen parking brakes and rusted brake lines are routine repairs here. Ice storms freeze door seals, wipers and locks.

  3. 03 Finding 3 of 5

Mud season hits hard around Concord.

The back roads in Bow, Hopkinton, Loudon and Canterbury turn soft and rutted in spring, and frost heaves break up pavement across the city. Those roads chew through tires, struts, tie rods and ball joints, and washboard gravel loosens heat shields and exhaust clamps. Summers are warm and pleasant, with humid stretches that test air conditioning.

  4. 04 Finding 4 of 5

A battery and block heater check in fall, a brake and rust inspection after mud season and a suspension check once the frost heaves appear suit the way Concord drives.

Commuters on I-89 and I-93 add highway miles that justify an extra brake check each year.

  5. 05 Finding 5 of 5

    State government shapes Concord's parking.

Thousands of state employees leave their cars in open lots and garages around the State House and the office complexes every weekday, where they sit through the coldest part of the day with no shelter. When the Legislature is in session, those lots and the streets nearby fill even faster. A battery that tests weak in October is unlikely to survive a full winter of that routine.

“My car broke down on the side of the road, and within minutes of calling, their mobile mechanic arrived. In no time, my car was up and running again.”

08 — Questions

Concord FAQ

Q.01Do you serve Bow, Hopkinton and Pembroke?

Yes. Concord mobile mechanics typically cover the Capital Region, including Bow, Hopkinton, Pembroke, Loudon and Boscawen.

Q.02Can a mobile mechanic come to a state office lot?

Usually, yes, where there is a safe spot and the property allows it.

Q.03Do mobile mechanics work in winter?

Yes. A garage or carport helps, but most repairs can be done outdoors.

Q.04Can a mechanic come to my state office lot downtown?

Often, yes. State workers commonly have batteries, brakes and starters handled in their agency's lot or garage during the workday. Check with your agency about outside contractors, then pass along the lot and where the car is parked. The car can be running again by the end of the day, without taking time off for a shop visit.

Q.05Is mud season a problem for repairs on rural roads around Concord?

It can make access trickier on unpaved roads, but the mechanic can usually reach you. If your road is soft or rutted, park the car on firm ground near the end of the driveway. Mud season is also a good time to have the suspension, tires and brakes checked, since frost heaves and potholes take a real toll.

Q.06My car won't start in a speedway lot in Loudon. Can you help?

Yes, though race weekends bring huge crowds and heavy traffic on NH 106. If you can wait until the lots start to clear, the mechanic can reach you faster. Say which lot and row you're in when you reach out, and the mechanic will test the battery and charging system and get you on your way home.
