Getting around Wasilla

6 routes · driveway, lot or shoulder
  • Main street
  • Where the mechanic starts
Route briefing How a mobile mechanic reaches you in Wasilla
  1. Wasilla grew up along the Parks Highway, and the highway is still its main street. The Parks runs through the middle of town, west toward Meadow Lakes, Big Lake, Houston and Willow and east to its junction with the Glenn Highway, which carries commuters across the Matanuska and Knik river bridges to Eagle River and Anchorage. The Palmer-Wasilla Highway links the two Valley cities directly, and Knik-Goose Bay Road heads south toward Knik through busy, growing subdivisions.

  2. Bogard Road and Seldon Road run east-west north of town, carrying neighborhood traffic toward Palmer and the Wasilla-Fishhook Road, while Lucille Street and Main Street feed downtown. Many homes sit on gravel side roads off these arterials. Knik-Goose Bay Road and the Parks between town and the Glenn junction are the busiest stretches, and in winter a slide-off, a stall at a busy light or a no-start in a parking lot can tie up a whole afternoon.

  3. The Alaska Railroad runs through downtown and a small municipal airport serves private pilots, so most air travel means a drive to Anchorage. The regional hospital and the Mat-Su College campus lie east of town toward Palmer, drawing commuters from across the Valley. Public transit is limited, and nearly every household relies on its own vehicles, often trucks and SUVs that also tow boats, campers and snowmachine trailers. When one goes down, getting it fixed at home keeps the family schedule intact.

Around Wasilla, where the car sits

8 areas · pinned
  1. Downtown and the Parks Highway corridor

Big retail lots, offices and the older downtown blocks near Main Street and the railroad depot. A car that won't restart after shopping can usually be repaired right where it's parked.

  2. Wasilla Lake and Lake Lucille

Homes and parks around the two lakes on either side of downtown. Winter work happens in driveways and garages, and lakefront lots often have extra room to set up; mention it if the driveway slopes toward the water.

  3. Knik-Goose Bay Road

Subdivisions, schools and new construction stretching south from town. Commutes are long and the road is busy, so on-site repair beats sitting on the shoulder waiting for a tow.

  4. Knik-Fairview and Fairview Loop

A large unincorporated area south of town along Fairview Loop, with gravel roads, wooded lots and many young families. Driveways are roomy, but spring mud can make access tricky.

  5. Palmer-Wasilla Highway and the Lakes area

The busy corridor between the two cities, including the Lakes community around Cottonwood and Finger lakes. Office and retail lots along the highway are frequent work sites.

  6. Bogard and Seldon roads

Northern subdivisions on paved and gravel streets, with newer homes and plenty of garages. A garage makes cold-weather work much faster, even when it isn't heated.

  7. Meadow Lakes

West on the Parks Highway, with rural roads, lake cabins and long distances between homes. Clear directions and a plowed driveway make the visit go smoothly.

  8. Wasilla-Fishhook Road

The road north toward Hatcher Pass, lined with homes on acreage. Vehicles here often haul gear into the mountains, so brakes and cooling systems get a workout.

07 — Local conditions

What Wasilla does to a car

Field report · 3 findings
  1. 01 Finding 1 of 3

The Valley often runs colder than Anchorage on clear winter nights, and that is where most Wasilla car trouble starts.

Batteries that limped through fall finally fail, starters drag, and diesel trucks need their block heaters working every night. Cold also stiffens belts and hoses and makes plastic trim and electrical connectors brittle. A car parked outside without a plug-in during a cold snap is a likely no-start the next morning. Remote starters help on a dark morning, but they do nothing for a battery that has already lost its capacity.

  2. 02 Finding 2 of 3

    Roads take a toll year-round.

Gravel side roads throw rocks into windshields and grilles, and the washboard surface loosens exhaust hangers and wears out shocks. Frost heaves ripple the pavement on the Parks and the side roads every winter. Spring breakup is the hardest season on suspensions and alignment, with deep potholes and mud that cakes wheel wells and brakes. Long daily round trips to Anchorage put high mileage on vehicles quickly, so oil changes, brakes and tires come due sooner than many drivers expect.

  3. 03 Finding 3 of 3

Moose are everywhere in the Valley, and collisions damage lights, radiators and hoods throughout the dark months.

Summer is short but busy, with dust from gravel roads clogging air filters and heavy towing to lakes and campgrounds straining transmissions and cooling systems. Fall is the season to check the battery, test the block heater and cord and get winter tires on before the first snowfall turns the Parks Highway slick.

“My car broke down on the side of the road, and within minutes of calling, their mobile mechanic arrived. In no time, my car was up and running again.”

08 — Questions

Wasilla FAQ

Q.01Do you serve Big Lake and Palmer?

Most Wasilla mobile mechanics cover the core Mat-Su Valley, including Palmer, Big Lake, Meadow Lakes and Knik.

Q.02Can you come out to a cabin or job site?

Yes, as long as the road is passable. Share the location.

Q.03Can you install a block heater?

Yes. Block heater installation and repair is a common on-site job in the Valley.

Q.04Can a mechanic get to my house during spring breakup?

Usually, but road conditions decide it. When gravel roads turn soft and rutted in spring, some driveways become hard to reach with a loaded van. Describe your road and driveway when you reach out, and if access looks rough, moving the car to a firm spot near the main road makes the repair possible without anyone getting stuck in the mud. A paved store or church lot nearby works well too.

Q.05I commute to Anchorage. Can the repair happen at my workplace instead?

Often, yes. Many Valley drivers have work done in an office lot in Anchorage during the day, or at home in Wasilla in the evening. Share both locations and which one fits your schedule better. Since coverage depends on the mechanic, confirm the address you want to use, and you'll get a quote before anything starts on the vehicle.

Q.06Can you fix trailer wiring for my boat or snowmachine trailer?

Trailer light and wiring problems are common here, since so many trucks tow year-round. A mechanic can test the truck's trailer plug, track down a blown fuse, bad ground or corroded connector and repair it on-site. Slush and gravel are hard on those connections, so a check before the first big trip of each season is worthwhile, whether that's a lake weekend or a ride into the mountains.
